NLP, Setting Our Outcomes

Most people don’t plan to fail they fail to plan. Having a well defined goal or outcome gives the mind a focus and direction to aim at.

Numerous studies show written down goals are much more likely to happen.

Here are some NLP style questions to help you set a clearly defined goal for yourself.

We need to keep on refining your goal until it meets all of the conditions of the questions that follow;

Get yourself a pen and paper or a way to record your answers.

So what do you actually want?

Sounds obvious but how often do we stop to ask that question.

What do you actually want to achieve?

(as apposed to what you want to stop doing, avoid or quit)

Can you state it in the positive....

  • What do you need to do?
  • What do you require, that can be initialled and maintained by you?

We need to test it through sensory experiences.

  • Is it measureable in terms of what you and others can see, hear and feel?

How specifically will you know that you are making progress towards the goal and/or that the goal has been achieved?

  • Is it appropriately contextualised for example?
  • When and where do you want the outcome?
  • When and where do you no want the outcome?


  • Is this goal ecological for everyone affected by it?
  • What are the benefits of the current way of doing things?
  • How can you keep these benefits when you achieve your goal?
  • Who will the goal affect?
  • How might they perceive it as a threat or challenge?
  • What are their needs, and what will be the benefits to them?
